Tomas Flieschmann would eventually be traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenceman Scott Hannan and a draft pick.

In 2007-08, in a game at the Atlanta Thrashers, Ovechkin broke the record for most goals by a left winger which was originally held by Luc Robitaille of the LA Kings.

His future began when he was 2 years old, when he saw a toy hockey stick in a Soviet Toy Store and he refused to let it go. When a hockey game was on TV, Ovechkin dropped all of his toys and went to the TV, and he would protest if his parents tried to change the channel. His parents encouraged Ovechkin to be athletic, going to nearby basketball courts and soccer fields. He was so athletic as a child, he went up the stairs instead of taking the elevator to his 10th floor apartment.

Ovechkin is a 5-time all-star, making the All-Star Game in each of his first five NHL seasons.

Ovechkin has developed a rivalry with Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby. In an Eastern Conference Semifinals game at the Verizon Center in Washington, Crosby and Ovechkin recorded a hat trick each in a 4-3 Capitals win. The Penguins eventually took the series in 7 games. Ovechkin is also becoming a rival of the Tampa Bay Lightning's rising star Steven Stamkos. In 2009-2010, Stamkos beat Ovechkin for the Rocket Richard Trophy by a hat trick (3 goals) with 51 goals.

Ovechkin was drafted 1st overall by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has brought the Caps from worst to first. He was so good that the Capitals signed Ovechkin to a 13 year, $124 million deal in 2007, the 3rd longest contract in NHL history. In the 2005-06 season (Ovechkin's rookie year), the Capitals continued struggling, which made the Capitals acquire Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, and Mike Green via draft picks.

Ovechkin is not only a competitive player and a goal scorer, but he is also a hard hitting right wing. In a game against the Buffalo Sabres in his rookie season, Ovechkin executed a blindside hit on Danny Briere when he was ready to get off the ice for a line change. Ovechkin got a 5 minute boarding call and a game misconduct. In a 2009-2010 game against the Carolina Hurricanes at the RBC Center, Ovechkin put a knee-on-knee hit on Carolina's Tim Gleason, Ovechkin earned a 5 minute major for kneeing, a game misconduct, and a 2 game suspension. On March 14, 2010 in a game at the Chicago Blackhawks, Ovechkin shoved Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell from behind. Ovechkin recieved a 5 minute boarding penalty, a game misconduct, and a 1 game suspension. As for Brian Campbell, he ended up missing 7-8 weeks with a broken collarbone caused by the hit.

Since Ovechkin loves to score goals, he gets as excited as he does when a linemate or a teammate scores a goal. In Game 7 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the New York Rangers, Ovechkin's linemate Sergei Fedorov scored the game winning goal with under 5 minutes left in the 3rd period. Ovechkin skated as fast as he could towards Fedorov and when Ovechkin got to Fedorov, Ovechkin jumped on him in celebration. A video of that goal can be seen below.

Ovechkin is not only an amazing player, but he is known for his off-ice activites. The NHL Network made a 60 minute show called 'An Ovechkin Ovation- Alex's Greatest Goals' which chronicles Ovechkin's career on the ice from when he was drafted to the present. On November 16, 2010, a DVD was launched about Ovechkin called 'Alex Ovechkin- The GR8' which chronicles his career on the ice AND his off-ice activities. The DVD includes a segway tour around Washington with Ovechkin and his supporting cast.

Another example of Ovechkin's wacky and insane off-ice activities is when Alex and his sidekick Alexander Semin were playing soccer prior to a game vs. Montreal. Ovechkin lost the soccer ball in a nearby wall, so Semin got on Ovechkin's back and retrieved the ball.
